Talking Science

Science can help us to understand the world around us. But many people see science as something left behind in school - not often something they can engage in every day and all around them. Making scientific research - and scientists - more visible can make science as a whole more accessible, engaging, and relevant.

Why do I talk to the media?

A lot of science research tends to be scientists talking to other scientists. But to start a conversation, to make an impact, or to ignite a change in the community, you need to talk… to the community! The media can help get a message out to the people who need to hear it - from radio interviews, podcasts, video features, magazine articles and more, these platforms allow me to connect with people all around the country and world.

How does this achieve my goal of being a role model?

One of the biggest parts of being a role model is being visible. I’m sure there were awesome female scientists around when I was growing up, but I never saw them. Coming from a rural area where internet is still sketchy half the time, has led me to try and connect with audiences across as many platforms as possible - where I can be seen by people and can share my experiences with them.

In the Media…

The Found a Fossil Project

What would you do if you discovered a fossil, or an Indigneous artefact?

Natural and cultural heritage material, from fossils to Indigenous artefacts, are not always found by scientists or archaeologists. More often, they are found by farmers, bushwalkers, beachgoers, and beyond. Yet, the perspectives of these groups are often left out of the conversation. Who might these people tell if they discovered something? Would they bother telling anyone? Who would they trust with their finds? Who do they distrust, and why?

To answer some of these questions, the Found a Fossil project was created as part of my Master of Research thesis with Macquarie University. The project released an online survey in 2022 to see how Australians would answer these questions. A joint website was also created to provide information about heritage protections, identification, and handling guidelines to the finders of these special heritage discoveries.
